Portuguese Cinematheque

The mission of the Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema (Portuguese Cinematheque - Museum of Cinema) is to protect and promote cinema's heritage. It has been created in the early 50s by one of the pioneers of European Film Archives, Felix Manuel Ribeiro and became an independent institution in 1980.

Since 1956, Cinemateca is a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), founded in 1938 to promote the restoration and exhibition of moving images. In 1956, Cinemateca opened it's first own room, dedicated to their exhibitor activity.

In 1996, they opened a modern conservation center on the outskirts of Lisbon, which is now the basis of all conservation activities, technical research and access, including the use of new technologies.
