LEFFEST’17: First highlights announced

The first highlights of the 11 TH LEFFEST – Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival were just
announced in a press conference.

ISABELLE HUPPERT: Film retrospective and a Photography Show

The main focus of the LEFFEST – Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival’17 will be on actress Isabelle Huppert, with a big retrospective of the films she starred in, and an international photography show, Isabelle Huppert: Woman of Many Faces.

BATTLEFIELD: A play by Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne

The most recent work of theatre director Peter Brook (with the collaboration of Marie-Helène Estienne) is Battlefield, from the Mahabharata and the play by Jean-Claude Carrière.

JOÃO MÁRIO GRILO: Full Film Retrospective

The Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival’17 will dedicate a full retrospective to the film work of João Mário Grilo, including a yet unreleased short film, Não Esquecerás, which adapts the short story by writer Dulce Maria Cardoso.

IMAGES OF THE EAST, a film by Gidon Kremer and Sandro Kancheli, a concert and a debate

In a special session, the LEFFEST – Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival’17 will screen the film by Gidon Kremer and Sandro Kancheli, Images of the East, featuring the contribution of Syrian sculptor Nizar Ali Badr, followed by a concert with Gidon Kremer and Lithuanian cellist Giedrė Dirvanauskaitė and a debate on the refugees’ crisis.

DFS: A dance show by Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud

The LEFFEST’17 will present DFS, a show by the dance company Vlovajob Pru, premiered at La Bâtie-Festival in Genève, in 2016.

We take great pride in our past, but we make a clear commitment to the future, with a high quality programme, that is innovative as always. And on its 11th edition, which will take place from the 17th to the 26th of November, 2017, the LEFFEST is about to bring together, once more, the best of the Seventh Art. But that’s not all. The Festival is, as always, is invested on the interconnection of different cultural offers - from cinema to literature, music or the plastic arts – and asserts itself as a favorable environemnt for the reflection and discussion of the main current topics.
More than displaying films, the LEFFEST wants to offer the audience the chance to confront ideas, to make their voices heard, by participating in the reflections and life experience of the filmmakers, thinkers and writers.

The LEFFEST provides these reflections and experiences both on the screen – through a diverse programming that includes both prestigious and emerging film productions – and live, in the several artistic displays, masterclasses, debates and symposiums programmed for each edition. The Festival ensures the best movie selection for the competition and the projection of fundamental authors in the history of cinema and young emerging filmmakers.

The LEFFEST innovates, but it also keeps what defines it: unveiling new talents, paying tribute the notable personalities, through restrospectives or complete displays, and giving voice to rare filmmakers, those who kept their production immune to the pressures of the film industry; exhibiting creations by artists whose works are strongly associated with cinema; opening new roads and audiences for the Portuguese film industry.

In 2017, the LEFFEST will have, as always since its first edition, the presence of international stars - renowned figures in the current world of cinema, arts, literature, music, thought – who will share their knowledge and experience with the audience, through conferences, masterclasses, workshops, performances, debates, exhibits and shows.

With a programme that was carefully selected by people who live and breathe cinema, the 2017 LEFFEST places Lisbon, Sintra and the country once more in the tour of the major film festivals in the world.
