Films For All Ages

Back
The Educational Programme is a project developed especially for schools by the Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival.
In addition to a rich programme open to all audiences, LEFFEST also organises special sessions for teachers and students from preschool to highschool. With this programme, the festival intends to encourage the enjoyment of film, as well as foster critical thought and debate, stimulate artistic tastes and encourage active participation among its target audiences, in a recognition of the relevance of film towards the intellectual development of young audiences.

Educational Programme for preschool and key stage 1
KEEN EYES: PUPPETS AND THE WORLD OF IMAGINATION
The sessions intended for students from preschool to key stage 1 will feature short-films by motion-picture animator and director Jiří Trnka, often referred to as the “Walt Disney of Eastern Europe”.
Czech filmmaker, illustrator and puppet maker Jiří Trnka (1912-1969) is one of the greatest figures in the history of animation film, an art form which boasts an almost centenary tradition in the Czech Republic, where it saw its golden age during a period that ranged from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. Trnka’s animations are not based on drawings, as is usual, but instead accomplished using stop-motion techniques, through which physical models, such as puppets, are meticulously positioned and photographed, composing a sequence of fixed images that, once edited, create the illusion of movement.
The Czech filmmaker was involved in all aspects of his films — from the artistic design to the script, the directing and the animation process. Thanks to this all-encompassing vision, his work constitutes a legacy of extraordinary grace and beauty whose poetic style, inspired in folk tradition and fairytales, profoundly influenced the generations that followed. The opening of the session will feature a brief presentation and a historical contextualisation of the works screened. The screening will be followed by talks and debates on different topics.

Educational Programme for key stage 2 and 3 students
FILM AS AN ART FORM
Students at key stage 2 and 3 will be given the opportunity to discover the work of Buster Keaton, one of the legendary directors and comic actors of silent film.
Between 1917 and 1923, Buster Keaton starred in around thirty short-films, making him the highest paid star in Hollywood after Chaplin. His extensive filmography includes works such as Sherlock Jr. (1924), The General (1926) and The Navigator (1928). The outlandish obstacles of Keaton’s physical comedy, combined with his stoic posture and deadpan expression, evince, in the light of our day, his enormous contemporariness, and substantiate claims that he is the greatest actor-director of all time.

Highschool
CAN ART STILL BE SUBVERSIVE?
The starting point for the programme’s highschool-oriented activities is this edition’s international symposium theme: can art still be subversive? What role does art fulfill today? What are its expressions and potentialities, both in and outside the educational context? These sessions intend to foster, through film, a collective and dynamic reflection on the role of art and cinematographic literacy in the quest for a civic education and the development of a social conscience that is aware of the intricacies of power relations. Each session will, after a brief introduction, feature the screening of a feature film related to the theme, followed by a discussion.

Senior Audience
ALL THE DREAMS
Can the magic aura of a film festival evoke the golden age of film for a generation that has lived through it? That is the question that the Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival asks of its audience, through the organisation of an exclusive screening of one of the best Portuguese films of the year, Todos os Sonhos do Mundo, which follows the adventures of a young girl from the second wave of Portuguese emigration to France. The session will feature a brief presentation of the film, followed by a talk.
