Jorge Queiroz was born in Lisbon in 1966. After a short stay in the Royal College of Art in London, in 1997, he joined the School of Visual Arts in New York where he lived for six years. In 2004 he moved to Berlin and his work has now a wide presence in galleries and museums all over the world. In 2003 he took part in the Venice Biennale, by invitation of commissioner Francesco Bonami, and in the São Paulo Bienal, in 2004, by invitation of Alfons Hug. Working mostly with the drawings, Queiroz starts from a post-surrealist or post-symbolist referential to create an eminently personal universe. In his dreamlike sceneries, he omits any structure or hierarchy, subverting the relationship between figure and background, in a profusion of traces and shapes that seem to turn on their own innards. Jorge Queiroz belongs to this imaginary, demonstrating that contemporaneity is far from the notion of identity as of Form, self and classicism.

Jorge Queiroz will be present in LEFFEST, Thursday the 22nd, at 15:00, in Cinema Medeia Monumental, to present the films QuatroViagem ao Coração do Douro, Terra onde NasciSe a Memória Existe.
