JOÃO MÁRIO GRILO: Full Film Retrospective

The Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival’17 will dedicate a full retrospective to the film work of João Mário Grilo, including a yet unreleased short film, Não Esquecerás, which adapts the short story by writer Dulce Maria Cardoso.

João Mário Grilo is a researcher and a Professor at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

With Maria (1979), his first feature film, he made his debut as a director. Since then, he has directed fifteen more fiction and documentary works. His films were selected several times for the most prestigious film festivals in the world, having been chosen for the Official Selections of the Venice Film Festival, with A Estrangeira (winner of the Georges Sadoul Award) and with Longe da Vista; of the Berlin and Toronto Film Festivals, with O Processo do Rei; of the Cannes Film Festival with O Fim do Mundo, and of the Locarno Film Festival, with Os Olhos da Ásia. His work was also shown at the film festivals in Vancouver, San Francisco, Houston, Rotterdam, Biarritz (where he won the Jury Prize and the Audience Award in 1982 and 1989), Hong Kong and Stockholm. Duas Mulheres was avant-premiered in the third edition of the LEFFEST, where he was included in the official selection, in competition.

For the ensemble of his work, João Mário Grilo won the Jury’s Special Prize at the FestRio in 1989, the PROCIREP Award in Cannes in 1990, the Aurélio Paz dos Reis Award in 2010 and the Best Documentary Award at the IndieLisboa Festival in 2012.

He has directed numerous documentaries in the fields of the arts, literature and architecture, the last two devoted to the work of the architects Raul Lino (A Vossa Casa, 2012, winner of the TAP award at the IndieLisboa Festival) and Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles (A Vossa Terra, 2016). He’s working on a documentary, Vieirarpád, about the artists Vieira da Silva and Árpád Szenes.

He’s the author of several books, namely O Livro das Imagens (2007), O Homem Imaginado (2006), As Lições do Cinema (2006) and O Cinema da Não-Ilusão (2006), and has published numerous articles about cinema and contemporary art in Portuguese and foreign publications (as in the Traffic magazine).
