Jonathan Demme – A Dedication

Back
Jonathan Demme, to whom LEFFEST paid a tribute in 2015, beyond the great and eclectic body of work he left, was always a great enthusiast of the films by other directors, about which he always spoke in a very passionate way. P.T. Anderson, who was a great admirer (it was a reciprocal admiration) dedicates him his latest opus, Phantom Thread.

That same edition of LEFFEST, it was also with a Jonathan Demme’s initiative that we started the program dedicated to Austin, Texas, the new pole of American film, where most of the best US cinema of today is made. At the beginning of the 80s, a group of young musicians and artists, film lovers, invited Demme for a barbecue and showed him some shorts they had made. Jonathan loved these shorts and chose six of them to make a program he showed later in New York: Jonathan Demme Presents: Made in Texas.  Following a digital restoration, Jonathan Demme presented this program again, at LEFFEST, with Louis Black, one of those youngsters, journalist of the Austin Chronicle, and cofounder of South By. We think it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
