The National Theater building was built in 1846 and opened during Queen Maria II’s 27th birthday celebrations, hence its official name. After the implementation of the Republic, the name was changed to Almeida Garrett National Theater and its longest administration was under Amélia Rey Colaço / Robles Monteiro.
In the 20th century, the theater suffered a big fire in 1964 and only the outside was spared. In 1978, it reopened, respecting the original neoclassical style that defined it. Since 2007, it was integrated into the State’s business sector.
