Sintra Diaries

Back
Readings of Journals and Letters.

In the 30’s three of the most significant English writers of that generation — Christopher H. Isherwood, Stephen Spender and later W. H. Auden—, traveled by boat from England to Portugal. Sintra was their destination.

By this time, they shared a daily journal in which they wrote about various political matters merged with emotional experiences. We can find this echoes in their later works. This book is the result of a research by Matthew Spender (Stephen’s son), sculptor and writer.

It is not published in Portugal yet and it gives us a first hand perception of Sintra, Portugal and Europe in a period of great disturbance.
