Far From Sight

A film by João Mário Grilo

Back
Eugénio, 64-year-old convict in a Portuguese prison; Daniel, an “honest and hard-working” truck-driver from Massachusetts, . Different stories and destinies brought together through a “matrimonial” ad. From within his cell, Eugénio gives himself to the other in the fictitious form of a young Portuguese maiden: Maria da Luz and embarks on a correspondence in which each loving word is paid by the dollar. The amorous dialogue eventually spreads among a chorus of other voices and interests: Idalina, Eugénio’s sister, Vasco, his young cellmate, Abel, the wise cabinet maker, and Rute, Vasco’s girlfriend, the physical representation for the imaginary Maria da Luz. Such is the last wonderful work by Eugénio who - with the proverbial wisdom of many wise man - once said that “one day it will be because of this that you remember me”. And so it was.
