Xavier Beauvois was born in Auchel, France. He worked for a time as assistant director to André Téchiné and Manoel de Oliviera before directing his own features, which include Nord(91), N'oublie pas que tu vas mourir (95), Selon Matthieu (00), Le petit lieutenant (05), Des hommes et des dieux (10) and La rançon de la gloire (14). Les Gardiennes (17) is his latest work.
