Punch-Drunk Love

A film by Paul Thomas Anderson

Back
Barry is the lonely, frustrated, middle-aged owner of a company that creates no more ridicule of an item than themed toilet plungers. Bullied by his seven sisters and victim of spurts of anxiety, his life takes a turn for the worse after he calls a sex-phone line only to find himself extorted by the woman on the other end of the phone. Doused by a layer of black humour, Punch-Drunk Love breaks the light-hearted dullness of the convencional comedy formula to give way to the boiling depths of a character that feels displaced from the world that surrounds him.
