Memory Box

A film by Joana Hadjithomas e Khalil Joreige

Back
Maia lives in Montreal with her teenage daughter, Alex. On Christmas night, Maia receives a box. Inside are the notebooks, recordings and photos she sent to her best friend after she left Lebanon. Maia refuses to open this "Pandora’s box”, but Alex, trapped at home due to a snowstorm, ends up, secretly, rummaging through her mother's memory box, discovering Maia's troubled teenage years during the war in Beirut. Memory Box is the most admirable film by the Lebanese duo, who have been addressing and elaborating on the role of memory in the creation of images and the emotional processes associated with war traumas.

Director

Joana Hadjithomas e Khalil Joreige

Filmmakers and artists, Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige question through their work the fabrication of images and representations, the construction of imaginaries and the writing of history. Their work creates thematic and formal connections between photography, video, performance, art installations, sculpture and cinema, whether in fiction or in documentaries. Their filmography includes A Perfect Day (2005), which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize, I Want to See (2008), starring Catherine Deneuve and Rabih Mroué, The Lebanese Rocket Society: The Strange Tale of the Lebanese Space Race (2012), which received multiple awards, and Ismyrna (2016), which depicts Joana's meeting with artist and poet Etel Adnan in the late 1990s. Many retrospectives of their films have been presented as internationally renowned institutions, and, in the field of plastic arts, their creations are exhibited all around the world and are part of the greatest art collections.
