Based on Annie Ernaux's semi-biographical novel The Happening, Audrey Diwan's second feature film follows the story of Anne, an ambitious student of French literature, who discovers she’s pregnant after a casual fling. The pregnancy appears to Anne as a death sentence; a seemingly insoluble event that would shatter her expectations and paralyze her ambitions. Set in 1963, a time when abortion was banned and criminalized in France, the film explores Anne's dilemma as she goes on a desperate search for help.
