Carandiru is a journey into the intimacy of the inmates of the most famous prison in São Paulo, Brazil. The stories they tell the prison doctor, in a surprisingly light way, are like tales, full of humanity, despair, love, betrayal, revenge, hope…

But that genuineness quickly disappears, when the spectator and the inmates are confronted with the extremely violent and inhuman reality of the prison, governed by its own codes, the first rule being the ability to survive at all costs - killing, drugging, praying… The spectator's journey ends with them, on October 2, 1992, a day sadly remembered as the day of the biggest massacre in Latin America's prison system, where 111 men were murdered by the Military Police of São Paulo.

The film, in addition to portraying that disastrous day, was made in the prison where the real massacre took place: Carandiru.
