Novocherkassk, Soviet Union, 1962. Lyudmila, loyal communist and member of the city committee, witnesses the shooting of unarmed protesters by the Soviet Army and KGB officials as these demonstrate at a labor strike. During the days of the event, her daughter goes missing. To find her, Lyudmila must confront her own values and political vision so as to battle against a system that is arresting people, blocking streets and hiding the truth about the happenings of the massacre. Konchalovsky’s historical drama brings to the surface the real events of June 2nd 1962, kept secret up until the 1990’s, in a powerful monochrome aesthetic.
