Filmed in Parisian parks and in a terrace, Le Divertissement anticipates the labyrinthic rambles that would later feature in the cinema of Jacques Rivette, in which his characters continuously look for each other, cross paths and get lost again, as if in a romantic treasure hunt. Marked by the poetic language and timber that would become one of Rivette’s cinematic signatures, the film gives us access to the origins of an artistic journey that would climax in the filmmaker’s absolute mastery over the art of the mise-en-scène and editing.
