In this sort of kammerspiel, the relationship between the characters is expressed through suggestive gazes, through gestures and cigarettes being put out, but also through lighting itself. A  “psychological film”, director Jacques Rivette sees the Le Quadrille as “a small exercise of style: five characters in an impersonal, austere room. Three boys and two girls: they remain silent, seated and still (an experimental game reduced to short-range gestures)”. Written in collaboration with Jean-Luc Godard, who also produced the film and starred in it, the film is an experiment at the genesis of Nouvelle Vague.
