Distinguished Romanian filmmaker Cristi Puiu engulfs the screen with a slow-paced cerebral tableau vivant, set in an imposing Transylvanian country house near the end of the 19th century. Inspired by Russian philosopher Solovyov’s 1915 text “Three Conversations”, this period drama follows a loquacious group of the social elite composed of a general, a nobleman, a politician and several aristocratic ladies. The group converses about Good and Evil, God and man, science and warfare, filling the magisterial rooms of the residence with detailed contemplations bouncing off one character to another in a strict, eloquent, squared mise-en-scène.
