With a cast largely made up of non-actors, Sean Baker's new film, four years after The Florida Project, focuses once again on figures on the fringe of American society. In this case, a washed-up gay porn movie star who returns to his hometown (Texas City) to ask his ex-wife to take welcome him at her home for a while. The title of the film refers to a term that designates the erect penis of a dog and also serves as a metaphor for the individualistic and sometimes stigmatizing inhumanism of a system that treats its "outlaws" literally "below a dog" and cancels every illusory American dream with “sanitary fences” around those who are often the deforming mirror that gives us back a guilty image that we neither want to see nor like to understand as our own.
