Jane Campion caught Cannes' attention with her first feature film that was both extravagant and unsettling. The story centers on the relationship between two sisters, one reserved and thoughtful and the other more immature and extroverted, who are forced to cohabit at a time when their parents are separating. Here, Campion addresses issues (which the following year she would develop in An Angel at My Table) such as delirium, superstition, psychic fragility or the devastation that a husband's indifference and a father's misguided attention can cause on the emotional development of two very different women.
