In a quite distinct register from his well-known film Killer of Sheep, Burnett nonetheless keeps a sensitive characterization of all characters - allowing him to maintain a human eye over difficult themes like social mobility within african-american communities, and their occasional alienation to their own historical and cultural roots.

A movie endowed with qualities of an old tale, To Sleep With Anger watches how the character and disagreement within an african american, LA-based family unravel, upon the arrival of a long-lost acquaintance, Harry. Settling in the house against its owners’ will, and insisting on annoyingly instigative behaviours, this mischievously charming main character manages to bring the family members to a physical and mental breaking point of tolerance.
