Enrique Vila-Matas - Writer

Enrique Vila-Matas

Renowned Spanish writer Enrique Vila-Matas – who claims to have become a writer by “mistake”, since he originally aspired to be a filmmaker, but who, on being assigned to a military post in the North of Africa for a year, wrote a novel (Mujer en el Espejo Contemplando el Paisaje, 1973) “so as to not have the feeling of wasted time” – is the author of a wide and singular body of work, divided between novels, short stories and essays. Vila-Matas has received several awards, including those for Bartleby and Company (2000), Montano’s Malady (2002), Doctor Pasavento (2006) and Dublinesque (2010).

The conference/performance Radically Not Original, which will take place during this edition of the festival, is yet another creative step for the collaboration which Vila-Matas and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster have been developing for the past two decades. In addition to this, Vila-Matas will also unveil the Portuguese edition of his latest novel, Mac e o seu contratempo, published by Teodolito.
