Krystian Lupa was born in Poland in 1943 and is one of the prominent European stage
directors. Lupa was a Physics student but graduated in graphic design, film directing (from the Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School in Lódz) and theatre directing (from the State Higher School of Theatre in Krakow). He was greatly influenced by Tadeusz Kantor (his “master” alongside the filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky) and by Jung, which makes him develop his conception of theatre as an instrument for exploring and transgressing boundaries of individuality, a “theatre of revelation” Krystian Lupa began by stage directing the great 20th century Polish playwrights (Witkiewicz, Wyspianski, Gombrowicz) and dramatic texts by Tchekhov, Genet and Reza. He is also devoted to carrying out his own creations (Factory 2, Persona. Marilyn and Le Corps de Simone, which are focused on Marilyn Monroe and Simone Weil) and the stage directions of literary texts by authors such as Musil, Bernhard, Dostoïevski, Nietschze and Rilke. In 2010, he directs the Beckett’s play Endgame for the La Abadía Theatre in Madrid. A complete creator (also responsible for his show’s scenography and lights), Lupa is well known for his work preparing actors and has been bestowed with various prestigious theatre awards.
