Nuno Júdice is a poet, essayist and university professor from Portimão. He studied Roman Philosophy at Universidade de Lisboa, subsequently becoming a highschool teacher. Currently he is a professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he received his doctorate in 1989 with a thesis on Medieval Literature. He also collaborated on the publications O Tempo e o Modo and Jornal de Letras. From 1997, he became a Cultural Advisor at the Portuguese Embassy in Paris, and the director of the Camões Institute. In France, he published a book on Portuguese literature of the 20th century, Voyage dans Un Siècle de Littérature Portugaise, translated and reissued in Portugal under the title Viagem Por Um Século de Literatura. His books have been translated and edited in countries such as Spain, Italy, Venezuela, England and France, where his work Un Chant Dans L’Épaisseur du Temps has been published as part of the Poésie/Gallimard collection. He made his poetry debut with A Noção do Poema, in 1972. He also published works such as A Partilha dos Mitos (1982), A Condescência do Ser (1988),  numerações e Sombras (1989), Um Canto na Espessura do Tempo (1992), Meditação Sobre Ruínas (1994), a book which won him an award from the Portuguese Writer’s Association, and the novels Plâncton (1981), A Manta Religiosa (1982) and O Anjo da Tempestade (2005). He is also the author of famous essays, among which his doctoral thesis, and others such as A Era do “Orpheu” (1986) and As Máscaras do Poema (1988), the latter a compilation of many of his essays and reviews. He organized the European Poetry Week within the context of Lisbon 94 – European Capital of Culture. He was the director of the literary magazine Tabacaria, edited by Casa Fernando Pessoa, and Commissary for Literature within the context of the Portuguese presence in the 49th Frankfurt Book Fair. He also received poetry and fiction awards (in ex-aequo with Pedro Rosa Mendes), attributed by the PEN Clube Português in 1985 and 1999 respectively. He also received the Fernando Namora Literary Award for O Anjo da Tempestade, and the Cesário Verde “Consagração” Award for O Estado dos Campos (2003). In 2001 he published Pedro, Lembrando Inês and Cartografia de Emoções, a poetry book. In the same year, Rimas e Contas, part of the collection Poesia Reunida 1976/2000, was distinguished with the Critic’s award by the Portuguese Center of the International Association of Literary Critics. In 2007, he was the recipient of the Ramos Rosa National Poetry Award and also received the Pablo Neruda Poetry Award and the Casa de Mateus Foundation Award.
