The American artist Laura Poitras, filmmaker and journalist, a guest of the LEFFEST’14, has on display until May 1st at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, her first big exhibition, entitled Astro Noise.

This exhibition, made of an interrelated series of installations, reflects and expands on several of the frequent themes in Poitras’ work, including mass surveillance, the war on terror, the U.S. drone program, Guantánamo Bay Prison, occupation, and torture. Some of these issues have been investigated in her trilogy of films about post-9/11 America: My Country, My Country (2006), The Oath (2010) and Citizenfour (2014), about the Edward Snowden case, awarded the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2015 and for which journalistic reporting and investigation Laura Poitras received the 2014 Pulitzer Prize.

Citizenfour had its Portuguese premiere at the LEFFEST’14, and was followed by a conversation with Laura Poitras and Jacob Appelbaum. This film and 21 other ones were screened during the International Symposium entitled Fiction and Reality: beyond Big Brother (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4), which included contributions by Noam Chomsky (an interview included in part 1), Julian Assange (a live stream included in part 4), Baltasar Garzón, Philippe Aigrain, Jérémie Zimmermann, Jacob Appelbaum, Eric Sadin, Eben Moglen, Jennifer Robinson and Rui Tavares.
