Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival

A guest of LEFFEST from the very start, EMANUEL UNGARO (1933-2019), passed away last Saturday at 86. He took part in the first edition of the then-called European Film Festival Estoril '07, for the debate "Fashion as an artistic expression and its inevitable connection to Cinema".

This association to LEFFEST has continued over the years and Ungaro was held as one of the festival's Best Friends. He integrated the 2008 edition jury; led the 2009 masterclass "Who dictates Fashion: Magazines or Creators?", by occasion of the documentary The September Issue by R.J. Cutler on the iconic annual number of North-American Vogue magazine by editor Anna Wintour; participated in a 2014 talk about Yves Saint Laurent, whom he met, after the screening of Bertrand Bonello's film about the genius and controversial french designer, with Bonello, Portuguese fashion designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista, and LEFFEST director Paulo Branco. A conversation about fashion and cinema, with someone who has dressed film stars such as Catherine Deneuve, who was his fellow juror in 2008, Gena Rowlands, Anouk Aimée, Isabelle Adjani… In that same year, he took part in the debate session "Fashion, cinema and stage arts", with fashion designers Bella Freud and Bay Garnett, actress Gala Gordon and Felipe Oliveira Baptista, after the screening of the cinema classic Designing Woman (1957), by Vicente Minnelli, which is an example of Hollywood's depiction of the world of fashion, while simultaneously exploring its inner "psychology".

Ungaro was the son of an Italian tailor who took refuge in France running from Mussolini's fascist Italy. He worked as an assistant for Balenciaga and Andrés Courrèges, was part of a generation of new audacious fashion designers such as Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld, and Oscar de la Renta, and revolutionized fashion during the 1960s and 70s.

It is with deep grief that LEFFEST sees the loss of Emanuel Ungaro, a unique creator, and a friend.
