French actress Juliette Binoche, a guest of the LEFFEST in 2009 and 2013, will star in one of the segments of Together Now, an omnibus of short films
directed by women of different nationalities. This will be the first feature
film of a newly launched not-for-profit production company WDIT – We Do It Together, aiming
to improve opportunities for women in the cinema industry and of whose Advisory
Board Juliette Binoche is a member.
Binoche, together with actress Freida Pinto, also on the Advisory Board, announced WDIT’s first work in a launching session at the Cannes Film Festival. Robin Wright, Katia Lund and Patricia Riggen are among the seven directors of Together Now.
WDIT’s aim is to tackle the gender gap in Hollywood by focusing on film and television projects that empower women. Actress and director Valeria Golino, a guest of the LEFFEST in 2010 and 2013 and, among others, Jessica Chastain, Jodie Foster and Queen Latifah, are also on the Advisory Board.
The LEFFEST’09 paid tribute to Juliette Binoche with a retrospective of 14 of the films where she stars: Rendez-vous by André Téchiné (1985), Mauvais Sang by Leos Carax (1986), Les Amants du Pont-Neuf by Leos Carax (1991), Trois Couleurs: Bleu by Krzysztof Kieslowski (1993), Le Hussard sur le Toit by Jean-Paul Rappeneau (1995), Code Inconnu by Michael Haneke (2000), Décalage Horaire by Danièle Thompson (2001), Caché by Michael Haneke (2005), Mary by Abel Ferrara (2005), Quelques Jours en Septembre by Santiago Amigorena (2006), Le Voyage du Balon Rouge by Hou Hsiao-hsien (2007), Désengagement by Amos Gitaï (2007), Paris by Cédric Kaplisch (2008) and Juliette Binoche dans les yeux by Marion Stalens (a documentary directed by Binoche’s sister).
Still in 2009, the LEFFEST presented Binoche’s exhibition of paintings and drawings, Portraits In-Eyes, in which, through 34 pairs of studies, the French actress creates portraits of some of the directors she worked with (Jean-Luc Godard, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Michael Haneke, Anthony Minghella, John Boorman, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Abbas Kiarostami) and represents herself as the character in the film they directed her.
In 2013, Juliette Binoche returned to the LEFFEST and gave a wonderful masterclass, Being Juliette Binoche (part 1, part 2), where she talked about her acting work since the beginning of her career.
