New Highlights of LEFFEST's 12th Edition Announced today

LEFFEST - LISBON & SINTRA FILM FESTIVAL is pleased to announce the latest news of the program of its 12th edition, which will take place from the 16th to the 25th November, in Lisbon and Sintra. A total of 150 films will be screened, 11 films in the Official Selection in Competition and 18 Out of Competition, some awarded by the most reputed international festivals and will have their Portuguese premiere at LEFFEST.
Amongst other guests, LAURIE ANDERSON, JEAN-CLAUDE CARRIÈRE, JACQUES AUDIARD, BRADY CORBET, LOUIS GARREL, LAETITIA CASTA, BALTASAR GARZÓN, AMINATA DRA-MANE TRAORÉ, DENNIS BERRY, PIERRE LÉON, CARMINHO and MARIANO LLINÁS will mark their presence in LEFFEST’18. The festival will pay homage to JOÃO BOTELHO, with his first and most complete retrospective in Portugal, to MARIO MARTONE, DAREZHAN OMIRBAYEV and WALTER SALLES. LEFFEST will also present retrospectives of MIKE LEIGH and PAUL SCHRADER.
The jury of the Official Selection - In Competition is WALTER SALLES (director), MARTHA ARG-HERICH (pianist), JONATHAN LITTELL (writer and director), STEPHEN KOVACEVICH (pianist e maestro), CRHYSTA BELL (singer, composer and actress) and JORGE QUEIROZ (artist).
The Official Selection - In Competition will present two more films: Blaze, by ETHAN HAWKE and Ray & Liz, by RICHARD BILLINGHAM. The film by RITA AZEVEDO GOMES, The Portuguese Woman, previously announced by LEFFEST’18, will not be screened for its premiere is reserved for a big international festival.
The Official Selection - Out of Competition and other national premieres, have new updates: Roma, by ALFONSO CUÁRON, winner of the Golden Lion in Venice, whose single cinema screening in Portugal will be at LEFFEST, Suspiria, by LUCA GUADAGNINO, Dovlatov, by ALEKSEY GERMAN JR, Rojo, by BENJAMIN NAISHTA, At Eternity’s Gate, by JULIAN SCHNABEL, The House That Jack Built, by LARS VON TRIER and La Flor, by the Argentine MARIANO LLINÁS.
This year’s program will focus on DAVID LYNCH’s work, with two photography exhibitions, in MU.SA, Sintra - “SMALL STORIES”, by DAVID LYNCH and “PSYCHOGENIC FUGUE” by SANDRO MILLER, along with several film and video works by the director, from the past twelve years. Other initiatives about his complex work will be presented, along with the presence of CHRYSTA BELL, who will screen music videos of her songs. A long-time collaborator of DAVID LYNCH, CHRYSTA BELL will present us "52 HZ", a video from her new album to be released on 2019.
Additionally, LEFFEST hosts “ARTURES”, a first time exhibition (in Portugal), by the Turkish artist YÜKSEL ARSLAN, with a selection of works from several series, such as “L’Homme”, “Influences” and “Nouvelles Influences”.
The screening of Torre Bela, in collaboration with Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema, will be part of the thematic program “THE DESIRE CALLED UTOPIA” and will host, among others, JOSÉ MANUEL COSTA, CHESTER HARLAN, ROBERTO PERPIGNANI, CAMILO MORTÁGUA, OTELO SARAIVA DE CARVALHO, WILSON FILIPE, FRANCISCO FANHAIS, VITORINO SA-LOMÉ and, as a moderator, PAULO BRANCO.
This thematic program also includes a “Carte Blanche” to WES ANDERSON, who will make a video presentation for Running Fence, by the MAYSLES BROTHERS. Another LEFFEST highlight is the cine-concert by the RODRIGO AMADO MOTION TRIO, who will play a special soundtrack for the film Fragment of an Empire, by FRIDRIKH ERMLER.
The thematic program “NEOLIBERALISM - the seed of Populism and new Fascisms?” will screen a series of films, whose centrepiece will be Mr. Klein, by JOSEPH LOSEY (with Alain Delon), and will close on a debate with several guests, BALTASAR GARZÓN, JOSÉ GIL, AMINATA DRAMANE TRAORÉ and NICOLAU SANTOS, following the premiere of the film The Code, by CARLES CAPARRÓS, presented by BALTASAR GARZÓN.
“Works in Progress”, by MATHIEU AMALRIC (John Zorn 2, 2016-2018) is another highlight, along with the Portuguese premieres of Piazzola, Los Años del Tiburón, by DANIEL ROSENFELD, Sauvages by DENNIS BERRY, 8, Avenue Lénine, by VALÉRIE MITTEAUX and ANNA PITOUN, Magnetyk Pathways, by EDGAR PÊRA, Ainda Tenho Um Sonho ou Dois - A História dos Pop Dell’Arte, by NUNO GALOPIM and NUNO DUARTE, always with the presence of the directors and followed by talks.
JEAN-CLAUDE CARRIÈRE, one of cinema’s most important screenwriters, will talk about his work with LUÍS BUÑUEL (director of the film Cet Obscur Object du Désir, 1977) in a special screening, with a restored copy. This section will also screen two films by PIERRE LÉON, Deux Rémi Deux (2015) and Deux Dames Sérieuses (1988), presented by the director.
Espaço Nimas will host the return of LAURIE ANDERSON to Portugal, in a very special session, with Anderson’s new visual and sound pieces, accompanied by a talk / performance.
Carminho no Lux, closes JOÃO BOTELHO’s retrospective, in TNDM II, followed by a talk and fados by CARMINHO. Still in TNDM II, after the awards ceremony, LEFFEST highlights “MARTHA ARGERICH e STEPHEN KOVACEVICH, PLAYS FOR TWO PIANOS AND A CONVERSATION”.
