Complete STRAUB–HUILLET Retrospective at the MoMA and Centre Pompidou
The MoMA (May 6 – June 6) and the Centre Pompidou (May 27 – July 3rd) present complete retrospectives of the films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, who together formed one of the most intense and challenging collaborations in the history of cinema. In 2011 and 2014, the LEFFEST presented, in special screenings, an ensemble of films directed by Straub after Huillet’s death in 2006.

Reina Sofia Museum, in Madrid, presents, in collaboration with Filmoteca Española, a complete retrospective dedicated to the work of one of the most extraordinary creative partnerships in the history of cinema, that of film-makers Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, with the title To Make the Revolution Also Means to Put Back Into Place Things that Are Very Ancient But Forgotten, between October 7 and November 25.

The retrospective will open with the director’s first feature film, A Young Poet (2014), on Saturday, November 16th, at 11AM, followed by a screening of his most recent film, Isadora’s Children, after which Damien Manivel will join us in talking about his films.

JULIETTE BINOCHE in segment of TOGETHER NOW: first film of new company WE DO IT TOGETHER directed by 7 women
French actress Juliette Binoche, a guest of the LEFFEST in 2009 and 2013, will star in one of the segments of Together Now, an omnibus of short films directed by women of different nationalities. This will be the first feature film of a newly launched not-for-profit production company WDIT – We Do It Together, aiming to improve opportunities for women in the cinema industry and of whose Advisory Board Juliette Binoche is a member.

The LEFFEST will dedicated a programme to a less known side of writer Paul Bowles, his legacy as a classical composer, in a way shadowed by is literary work.

PAUL BOWLES, the restless traveller
Two documentaries on the life and work of American writer and composer PAUL BOWLES, to be screened together. Hermínia Sol, one of the directors, and Irene Herrmann, the musical heir of the Estate of Paul Bowles.
Thematic Programme: Looking for Homeland
This programme, taking place in Lisbon between Espaço Nimas and Lusófona University from the 18th to the 23rd of November, brings us several rare and special films from around the world, in a course of cinema and debates attempting to rethink the concept of “homeland” through this art form.
Curated by Alexey Artamonov, Denis Ruzaev e Ines Branco Lopez, Looking for Homeland is attended by North-American director Khalik Allah, German producer and filmmaker Andreas Goldstein and Belgian videographer and voice performer Maxime Jean-Baptiste.
Amongst the sessions, LEFFEST’19 will screen Sarah Maldoror’s short films Monangambé, À Bissau, Carnaval and Fogo, L’Île de Feu, Edgar Reitz’s Tales from the Hunsrück Village, and films by Chantal Akerman and Kazuo Hara.
Starting the week with Looking for Homeland, Abel Ferrara, José Miguel Ribeiro, and many films in Competition!
We start the week at LEFFEST with a busy day, full of unique sessions and premières, bul also of intimate moments with several guest directors.
From the opening of Looking for Homeland, in a first a session with programme’s curators, to meeting Abel Ferrara, encompassing moments with guest directors Grear Patterson, Oliver Laxe, Gonçalo Waddington, Valentyn Vasyanovich and Dmitry Mamuliya, the 4th day of LEFFEST’19 brings us films like Antichrist, Chant d’hiver and Lower City.
STEPHEN FREARS AT THE FESTIVAL’S LAST WEEKEND!
To finish off the last LEFFEST weekend in full, we are joined by famed British director Stephen Frears!
His iconic films My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and The Grifters (1990) will be screened alongside his latest series A Very English Scandal (2018).

Symposium “The Arts and The Public in the Post-Pandemic World” at LEFFEST’20
Between the 14th and the 17th of November, LEFFEST presents the symposium “The Arts and The Public in the Post-Pandemic World”, a moment of reflection about the effects that the ongoing crisis has had on the arts and culture sectors. The event will take place at Teatro Tivoli BBVA and Cinema Medeia Nimas, and will welcome creatives and programmers representing different artistic fields: Music, Cinema, Literature, Performative and Plastic Arts, and Fashion.
